The 30 hour famine is set and ready to take place in Highland on March 20th and 21st at the Highland Food Pantry!  We would love for YOUR youth group to be a part of this event!  Students around Highland will be teaming up with each other and World Vision to fight world hunger by fasting for 30 hours.

What’s going on?

Students (junior high and high school students) will stop eating at 1:00 pm (on their own) on Friday March 20th.  They will then gather at the Highland Food Pantry at 6:00 pm to continue the fast together until we break the fast on Saturday at 7:00 pm (we will break the fast with a pizza party).  They will need to bring sleeping bags, an extra set of clothes (for service projects around Highland), and any drinks that they want for the fast (absolutely no pop, soda, caffeinated beverages, energy drinks, tea, or milk. Gatorade, water, and juice are all perfectly alright).

How can you participate?

We need a rough estimate on how many students will be doing the fast.  Therefore, if you are planning for your group to attend this event, please send me a rough estimate of your numbers (how many students are coming).  I have also included a parent letter and consent form for your students (e-mail me for this).  This should answer other questions and give parents an understanding of what is happening.  Students will need to bring that consent form with them at 6:00 pm on March 20th.

What about other activities?

If students have any events going on Saturday they may leave the famine but are required to have a paper signed by a parent or guardian stating when they are to leave and the time they will return back to the famine (for example, sports teams that have a practice).  We do not encourage students to leave but understand if there is an event going on.  Students are asked to continue the fast if they leave the event.  Please understand and communicate how important it is for students to be involved for the entire famine!

I wanted to share with you all an event we are having here at Evangelical for 6th – 8th graders.  We are having a Middle School Halloween Mixer and all youth from all churches and all in town are welcome and encouraged to attend.  We are approaching Halloween as an opportunity to let our Christian light shine (like the pumpkin!).  We are emphasizing the Christian influences and strive to make Hallow’s Eve a celebration of the acts of God through his people the saints. It should be a day when acts of charity instead of vandalism and hatred abound. A day that emphasizes the light of Christ instead of the darkness of evil.

All 6th – 8th graders are welcome and invited.  A flyer is attached (halloween-mixer).  October 26th from 5-7 pm in the EvUCC Fellowship Hall.  Please let me know how many from your church plan to come so we are sure to have enough food, etc.!

St. Joseph’s Hospital, Highland, along with the Diocese of Springfield, is pleased to offer classes in Natural Family Planning.  Natural Family Planning refers to natural methods for achieving and avoiding pregnancy.  No drugs, devices or surgical procedures are used to avoid pregnancy.  Patrick O’Toole, Director of the Diocese’ Office for Marriage and Family Life and his wife, Daniele, teach the class.

The first class is October 21, 2008 from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. in Jehle Hall at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Highland. Follow up is provided as needed with Mr. and Mrs. O’Toole.

The cost is $40/couple or individual.  Your health insurance may pay for this.

Look Good, Feel Better:

St. Joseph’s Hospital, Highland, in association with the American Cancer Society, is pleased to host “Look Good, Feel Better” for women with any form of cancer.  Look Good, Feel Better is an opportunity for women  with cancer to learn how the treatments for cancer change their skin, learn how to care for their skin, learn to wear make-up while undergoing cancer treatment, and allow St. Josephs’ Hospital and the American Cancer society to provide you with two hours of pampering, laughter, and fellowship.

Our first session is Monday, October 27, 2008 in the New Board Room, Jehle Hall, St. Joseph’s Hospital.  There is no cost to you.  Class size is limited to 8 women.  St. Joseph’s Friends Van is available to transport you or your loved one to and from the class.  To enroll, please call Laura Foerster, RN, Director of Community Health Outreach at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Highland. Thank you to all who helped out with this event.  We had over 40 high school students participate and over 100 middle school students praying around the flagpole this morning!
